About EGON
Like so many great product ranges, the Egon and its Game-Changing Simplicity idea was the brainchild of two frustrated people. People who could see a need in a market, where something obvious was needed but had been ignored and passed off as unnecessary.
Heiner and Andrew were building 4x4 overland expedition trucks. For Heiner, a mechatronics engineer, it was part of his business. For Andrew, these were tools used to explore and film the world's most remote places.
And the frustration was this: Why is it that even from top branded 4x4 accessory workshops, the quality of electrical installations was so often amateurish? Because, they concluded, the expertise needed to do it well was not only a rarity, but considered not necessary. The quality benchmark is, to this day, “It’ll be alright.” And it appears to be this way in every country in the world.
They decided to create a product that was foolproof, so that anyone at almost any skill level could complete even a complex DC electrical installation with ease. As part of it, they removed fiddly, quality-intensive tasks such as soldering, crimping and heat shrink — and replaced them with a system that is as easy to complete as paint-by-numbers. Plug and play in the most literal sense. And because it’s not digital, both a 40-year-old and a 12-year-old can do it. Although the 12-year-old might want to play a video game instead. There is nothing like this anywhere on our little blue planet.
The “Egon,” as the DC-Hub became known, then evolved into the DC-Hub Dual, competent at dealing with multiple batteries and chargers, and even multiple voltages in one system.
The DC-Hub’s success resulted in more ideas being developed as new needs were identified. The EGON Relay-Hub is a similar concept to the DC-Hub, but with high-current switching enabled by automotive relays. And like the DC-Hub, it uses commonly found fuses and relays, making fault diagnostics even easier and components easily replaceable without special tools. Game-Changing Simplicity at work — and the perfect companion to the DC-Hub in more complex installations.
With those foundations laid, it was time to simplify other elements of overland truck installations, the most obvious being hot water in the kitchen and shower. Having a hot shower is nothing new in the bush, but installing an entire system in one’s garage in an afternoon was — until the invention of the EGON Water-Hub. As simple as cutting a slice of pizza, this system delivers hot and cold water at just the right temperature, potable and grey water intakes with contamination safeguards, all combined in a single, simple unit. Simple is an understatement. It works with any water heater, uses common fittings and is perfect for vans, boats, and even tiny homes without a mains water supply.
Andrew and Heiner decided from the outset that they would build for quality first, making outstanding products with the very best components they could find. Supporting local families is important to them, so products are hand-assembled in Western Australia, with components sourced from around the world, most from Germany.
Egon’s vision of Game-Changing Simplicity has now arrived in South Africa, powered by Trekara Expedition Solutions.
At the helm are Mike Wanliss and Ian Caister — Both passionate 4x4 and overland adventurers who have spent decades exploring, living the off-road lifestyle while testing vehicles and gear across Africa’s rugged landscapes.
Mike has been building, racing and pushing 4x4s to their limits since his early 20s, with a passion for combining reliability and performance in every expedition vehicle. Ian has built numerous overland rigs, and his true passion lies in getting out into the African bush — testing equipment in the wild, where it matters most.
Together, they are bringing EGON’s innovative product range to Africa, backed by local stock and distribution, ensuring faster access and support for South African adventurers, outfitters, and overland enthusiasts.
Whether it’s simplifying a dual-battery setup, building a fully modular overland system, or bringing reliable hot water to the campsite — EGON South Africa is here to deliver solutions that just work, every time.
We also offer hands-on support from Ian in South Africa, and if all else fails we get in touch with Heiner himself. Hard to believe that Heiner has the time. He does because he gets so few questions, and that is the point of making things simple.
